Why JCU Brisbane

James Cook University Brisbane campus offers an innovative approach to learning. Our mission is to equip students with both the essential theories they learn in the classrooms, and the soft skills they develop through exposure to real working situations.

Highly Credentialed University

James Cook University is Queensland's second oldest university.  In 2010, the University was ranked in the top 4% of universities worldwide by the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities.  Only one other Queensland university made this ranking.

Trimester Study Period Program

Our normal Brisbane academic calendar caters for three trimesters beginning in March, July and November.

This arrangement allows students to typically complete more subjects per year, than a standard semester program operating at many other Australian universities.  In fact, JCU Brisbane is the only JCU campus in Australia to operate a trimester model.

$A1,000 High Distinction Academic Award

Every international student who achieves a High Distinction (typical score of over 85% and above*) in their subject, receives the AUD1,000 academic award.

*Calculation of High Distinction scores may sometimes vary and will be determined in accordance with JCU policies.

Qualified Lecturers with Industry Experience

Our teaching staff are highly qualified, with years of experience in the commercial sector.  They bring these experiences into their lectures, giving students real insight into workplace situations, which is crucial in helping them understand the corporate world.

Strong Industry Links

James Cook University Brisbane's strong presence in the corporate environment has allowed many of our students the opportunity to experience the Australian corporate workplace through our suite of work placement programs.

Employment and Careers services through Joblinx

JCU Brisbane students have access to Joblinx, a privately owned recruitment agency, offering a wide range of services and training to enhance students' employability skills and expertise.  Co-located at the Brisbane campus, Joblinx services include assisting students with finding part-time, casual and graduate employment, as well as training, professional development and work experience programs.

Internships

Available at both undergraduate and master levels*, the internship is the perfect opportunity for students to put theory into practice.  Students spend a trimester with a host organisation on a project, and are marked according to their performance.

Internships are a great way to build on employable skills such as communication, problem solving, self management, organising among others.

Learning Resource Centre

This department provides academic support to all students through workshops and individual sessions.  Types of support include help with assignment writing, lecture note taking, organisational skills, exam preparation, research skills and much more.

This department also oversees the Student Mentor Program, which involves current students assisting new students with settling into their new university environment at the start of their first trimester.

Location

The campus is conveniently located in the middle of Brisbane's central business district, giving students the option to travel to university by bus, train or ferry.

Campus Facility

JCU Brisbane is equipped with modern facilities, including wireless internet connection, available throughout campus floors.  Lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and computer labs are equipped with the latest IT technology.
