Scholarships & Bursaries

There are a variety of scholarships and prizes available to undergraduate and postgraduate students.  Some of these are available by application, while others are awarded on the basis of merit.  Interested applicants are advised to contact the Scholarships Officer, James Cook University, telephone (07) 4781 5528 or email scholarships@jcu.edu.au for more information.

High Distinction (HD) Academic Award

JCU Brisbane recognises hardworking students by rewarding them with the High Distinction (HD) Award. International students who achieve a HD for their subject receive a $A1,000 bursary award, which is placed towards their tuition fee. Domestic students receive a $A250 award.  The HD bursary is only available at JCU Brisbane, and only applicable to students enrolled in a full degree program.

Todate, JCU Brisbane has given away almost A$1 million worth of High Distinction Awards since the scheme was first implemented in 2006.

The Academic Award is credited against subsequent subjects at JCU Brisbane. As the HD Award is credited against future trimester's fees, as of 1 July 2012, any HDs received in a student's final trimester of study will not carry a bursary.

Currently, there is no limit to the number of HD bursaries awarded each trimester. Should JCU Brisbane, in the future, limit the number of HD bursaries awarded each trimester, then the available HD bursaries will be awarded on academic merit.

Students will not receive a High Distinction Academic Award bursary under any one of the following circumstances:

  • failure to make full payment for ALL enrolled subjects by the appointed Census date for that trimester. Census date is usually five weeks after the commencement of lectures
  • for subjects for which they are on fee waiver bursaries, scholarships, exchange programs or cross institutional studies
  • for any subject being repeated at JCU Brisbane
  • if the student is found guilty of "Academic Misconduct" in any subject e.g. cheating, plagiarism
  • for any subject, if the student withdraws prior to the completion of their enrolled course
  • for any subject studied in a MBA weekend program/block mode format
  • for those students who choose to transfer to another JCU campus

The High Distinction score is a typical overall grade of over 85%.  Calculations may vary and will be determined in accordance with JCU policies.

Tuition Fee Bursary

JCU Brisbane may sometimes offer tuition fee bursaries to international students enrolled in a full degree program.

Students awarded with these tuition fee bursaries need to note that they will not be eligible to these bursaries in any one of the following circumstances:

  • withdrawal from a nominated course, or movement to a shorter or cheaper program
  • withdrawal from JCU Brisbane prior to completion of their enrolled course
  • transfer to another JCU campus
  • failure to make full payment for ALL enrolled subjects by the appointed Census date for each trimester.  Census date is usually five weeks after the commencement of lectures
  • if the student is found guilty of "Academic Misconduct" in any subject eg. cheating, plagiarism
  • bursaries are only redeemable in the final trimester of studies
  • if a student is to take advantage of the 20% corporate discount offered to students whose course is paid for by their corporate entity

Tuition Fee Bursaries will only be paid towards subjects studied at JCU Brisbane. The bursary will be forfeited if, for any reason the subject is studied at another education provider.

Corporate Discount

Eligible applicants who enrol in any postgraduate programs offered at JCU Brisbane, and whose course is paid for by their corporate entity, will receive a 20% corporate discount off the standard price of the course.

If the student leaves his/her employment before the completion of a program, all subsequent fees will revert to the standard pricing, unless alternative arrangements have been made in accordance with JCU Brisbane policy.

James Cook University Brisbane reserves the right to change these terms and conditions at any time without notice.
